About Precilla Augusta BELL
GEDCOM Note
Our Lady’s Convent, Nottingham
In 1844 Sister Angela Borini, who had received her novitiate training in Baggot Street in the life time of Catherine McAuley, came from Birmingham Convent with three other sisters to found a convent in Nottingham. From 1846 the sisters were inhabited a purpose built convent in College Street. This was designed by the famous architect AWN Pugin and had Hardman stained glass windows. The sisters were very quickly active in schools, visitation of the sick poor and also with the running of an orphanage and a House of Mercy. The convent in Nottingham closed in 1999.
The fact that Sr Cecelia is listed as a schoolteacher on the 1861 census is not surprising as education was the main ministry of the Sisters of Mercy. See the foundress, chronology and heritage sections of the Mercyworld website for more information
