At age 18 he left his native town to work in a woodenware factory at Troy, NY. Three years later in 1855 he went to Hanesville, WI, and for six years was clerk in the office of the Northwestern railroad there and was afterward in the freight office of the St. Paul railroad. From 1866 to the time of his death he was a resident of Monroe, WI, where he was agent of the railroad company 42 years. When he retired he was pensioned for faitful service. "Mr. Puffer enjoyed the acquaintance of practically every citizen of our city and was gentleman who was esteemed by all. In his youthful days he was an energetic man, taking great interest in his work and any underatking he was connected with. He was a leader in the organization of and the erection of the Episcopal church in this city and was a faithful and constant attendant at the services. He became affiliated with the Masonic lodge while a resident of Janesville: (newspaper obituary). The funeral was in charge of the lodge and was attended also by the Order of the Eastern Star, of which he was a member.
