About Priscilla Lemmon

Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel 1847–1868 Company Unknown (1862)

Age at departure: 76

Priscilla was born to John Abbott and Margaret Williams.

She was the twin sister of Elizabeth Abbott, who married Bartholemew Osborne.

Priscilla married John Lemmon September 3, 1804 in Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee.

Priscilla and John joined the LDS church and traveled across the country, as the members looked for a place to settle. Priscilla, John, and their children moved from Tennessee to Indiana, then across Illinois to the western border of Missouri.

When Priscilla's husband died in 1846 in Illinois, Priscilla decided to stay in there. She changed her mind later and moved with some of her children to Utah. In 1862 she was with her son, Allumbee, and his family, in a wagon train to Utah.

Priscilla and John had twelve children together:

William Berry Lemmon (1805 - 1868) Lucinda Lemmon (1806 - 1806) John Lemmon, Jr. (1807 - 1891) Mary Ann Lemmon (1809 - 1891) Isaac Lemmon (1811 - 1840 Rebecca Lemmon (1812 - 1892) James Abbot Lemmon (1815 - 1882) Peter Lemmon (1817 - 1881) Elizabeth Lemmon (1818 - 1912) Marcus Holobush Lemmon (1820 - 1884) Allumbee Lemmon (1823 - 1896) Alfred Buskirk Lemmon (1825 - 1847)

Priscilla died in the town of Northop, which was near Rockville in Kane County, Utah at the time she died. The border between Washington and Kane Counties changed, and the area is now in Washington County. The town of Northop is not on current-day maps.

DEATH DATE: Although Priscilla's headstone has a death date of July 10, 1875; this obituary, written at the time of Priscilla's death, establishes her death date as July 10, 1877.

DIED

At Northop, Kane Co., U.T., at 10 o'clock a.m., July 10, 1877, of old age, Priscilla Abbott Lemmon.

Deceased was born in Rockingham Co., N.C., November 16, 1785; she and her husband, John Lemmon, received the gospel in Greene County, Ind., in 1831, under the administration of Elder Samuel H. Smith and Reynolds Cahoon; moved to Jackson County, Missouri, in 1833; was driven from thence with the rest of the Saints in November of that year; afterwards settled in Davis County, near Adam-ondi-Ahman, and was driven out of the State, with the Saints in 1838; passed through all the persecutions to which the Saints were subjected in Hancock and adjoining counties in Illinois, and was driven from there in 1846. Her husband died just as they were ready to leave the State. She was the mother of twelve children, 11 of whom she raised to manhood and womanhood. She rejoiced in the fullness of the gospel to the last, being glad that she had lived until a Temple was completed, in which to work for the living and the dead. Before her demise she gave her son James Lemmon, with whom she was living, all information relative to their relations, of which she was possessed. She will now rest in peace "Until the resurrection day." She was buried at Springdale 4 p.m., July 11, 1877. Evan M. Greene. Note: Born in North Carolina. Died in Utah. Wife of Capt. John Lemmon, Sr. Tennessee Militia. Born in North Carolina June 12, 1870. Died in Illinois Oct. 27, 1846.
