Patience Prettyman (also shown in records as Prudence) was born in 1748 in Worcester Co., MD. She was the daughter of Thomas Prettyman Jr. and his wife Elizabeth (Enloe) Prettyman. Patience was their 7th child.

They eventually sett led in Greene County, Georgia, where both Patience (Prettyman) Knowles and her husband, Edmond (aka Edmund) Knowles Sr. died in the mid-1830s. They were each over 85 years old.
