

Arthur Winkworth Napper was born in Christchurch on 21 May 1896 (reg. 1896/4382). He was the son of Charles Frederick Napper (1846-1923) and Constance Napper (nee Bowern) (1855-1931) who married in St Luke's Church in Christchurch on 28 September 1878. Charles attended the Cathedral Grammar School in Christchurch. He became a chemist and was also as a Soloist of Christchurch Cathedral Choir. According to a note on his Cenotaph record he was engaged to Florence Edith Donaldson of Christchurch. Arthur was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Messines in in West Flanders, Belgium, during World War I. He is remembered on the Messines Ridge New Zealand Memorial.
