About Pte. Charles Lappan
Charles Lappan was born at Invercargill, New Zealand, on 9 December 1880 (reg. 1881/1846). He was the son of Frances Margaret Lappan and Michael Lappan of Dunedin. Charles was mining at Waipori when he joined up to serve during World War I with the Otago Infantry Battalion. He was wounded at Gallipoli, and is believed to have died of those wounds on the battlefield on the same day. Charles is remembered on the Chunuk Bair (New Zealand) Memorial in Chunuk Bair Cemetery, Gallipoli, and on the Lawrence War Memorial in Lawrence Cemetery, Otago, New Zealand (Find A Grave ID 117283501). "PERSONAL NOTES. Private Charles Lappan was born in Invercargill and educated at the George Street School, Dunedin. He is the only son of Mrs F. M. Lappan, of Dunedin, and is 33 years of age. He was employed in the 'Star' Office for two years in the machine room, and left to learn engineering. For some years he had worked at gold mining at Waipori, and has a share in a gold mine there. Hd left there for Trentham in February, and sailed with the Fourth Reinforcement Infantry. He was wounded on August 7." Source: Evening Star (9 September 1915, p. 9).
