About Pte. Everard Onslow Brown

Everard Onslow Brown was born at Mangawhai in Northland, New Zealand on 24 December 1890 (reg. 1891/3541). His parents were Robert Brown (1854-1910) and Mary Brown (née Hogan) (1862-1917) who had married at Ponsonby in Auckland on 26 January 1886. On 5 September 1916 Everard and Ellen Maud Anderson married in Auckland (reg. 1916/7482). Their daughter, Molly Ellen Brown, was born at Warkworth on 1 September 1917. Everard joined the New Zealand Infantry during World War I (Service No. WWI 54726). He became ill with measles at Wiltshire in England, and died of broncho pneumonia at Tidworth Military Hospital on 13 February 1918. Everard was buried in the Tidworth Military Cemetery, [C. 261.]. He is also remembered on the Matakana War Memorial located at the entrance to Matakana, a small rural village north-east of Warkworth in Northland, New Zealand. In 1921 Ellen remarried to Charles Edward Bond Whitaker (1893-1968). She died at Matakana on 10 June 1944. Their daughter Molly married Ernest Charles Tucker (1916–1978) on 23 June 1938. She died in Warkworth in December 2015 (bio by Debbie McCauley, 19 May 2022).
