About Pte. Frederick Leonard Hamblyn

Six Hamblyn brothers enlisted in Tariki, Taranaki to serve during World War One, only two came home. The first brother to lose his life at war was Henry, aged just 20, killed in action on New Zealand’s last day at The Somme. Later his brothers William and Thomas, both serving with the 1st Battalion of the Wellington Regiment, fought in the final push for Messines Ridge on 7 June 1917. The next day, New Zealand troops declared victory after two years of fighting to take the ridge from the German front line. Tragically both brothers were killed within hours of each other. Nearly a month later, the fourth brother James lost his life, just down the hill from Messines near La Basseville on 27 July 1917. An appeal was made by Tariki Patriotic Society to the Minister of Defence, Sir James Allen. Soon after, a decision was made to return the two remaining Hamblyn brothers home – one already wounded at a War Hospital and the other withdrawn to base duties out of harm’s way. Their mother Mary Hamblyn faced more heart-breaking loss at home, when her youngest son and husband died of Spanish flu. Source: Puke Ariki (Facebook, 25 April 2021).
