James Scanlon was the son of James Scanlon and Mary Ann Scanlon (nee Woolley) of Tasmania, Australia. During World War I he served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion. James was killed in action during the Battle of Messines. He was buried in the Saint Quentin Cabaret Military Cemetery in Belgium.
