About Pte. John Edward Leen

John Edward Leen was born at Gore in Southland, New Zealand on 30 October 1890. He was the son of Michael Leen (1857-1942) and Johanna Leen (nee Holland) (1864-1944) who married in 1890. John was their eldest child and was followed by Thomas 1891-1891, Mary Ellen (Polly) 1892-1941, Edward Patrick (Ned) 1894-1939, Kathleen Johanna (Kitty) 1896-1983, Michael James (Mick) 1899-1950 and Thomas Francis (Tommy) 1901-1983. John enlisted to serve during World War I with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He was killed in action on 10 April 1918 at the Somme and is remembered on the Grevillers New Zealand Memorial in France.
