About Pte. Robert Foster
Son of Christina and the late Edward Foster, of Lowburn Ferry, Otago, New Zealand. Killed in action, Gallipoli, Turkey, 4 August 1915. Buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery.
FOSTER, ROBERT, Private, No. 8/137, Otago Infantry Battalion New Zealand Expeditionary Force, youngest son of the late Edward Foster, of Lowburn Ferry, by his wife, Christine (Lowburn Ferry, via Cromwell, Central Otago, New Zealand), daughter of George Dalziell, of Shetland; b. Lowburn aforesaid, 10 Aug. 1894; educated Lowburn Public School, and was engaged in farming. He volunteered for Imperial service six days after the declaration of war, joined the Otago Infantry Battalion, 11 Aug. 1914, and left New Zealand with the main body. He took part in the landing at the Dardanelles on 25 April, and remained in the trenches until 4 Aug. 1915, on which day he was killed in action. His second brother, William, died on active service (see following notice), and his eldest and now only surviving brother is now (1916) on active service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
