About Pte. William Simpson
William Simpson was born at Jamberoo in the Kiama region of New South Wales, Australia, on 23 February 1878. His parents were Joseph Simpson (1851-1916) and Catherine Amelia Simpson (nee Gay) (1858-1942) who had married at Kiama on 16 June 1875. William is said to have served during the South Africa, 1899-1902 (Boer War). He is likely to be the Tpr. William Simpson who served with the 3rd New South Wales Mounted Rifles (Service No. SA 2882). William emigrated to New Zealand, where he worked as a bushman for Gamman's Mill at Omanawa Falls near Tauranga. During World War I he enlisted to serve with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade from Tauranga on 18 October 1915. At the time, his next of kin was noted as J. Simpson (father), Post Office, Corrimal, Illawarra, New South Wales, Australia. William was killed in action on 15 September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. At the time of his death he was serving with the Otago Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, and was aged 38. William was buried in the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery [XI. B. 12.] in France and is remembered on the Tauranga Roll of Honour (bio by Debbie McCauley, 10 July 2022).
