About Pvt. 54th. VA (CSA), Leander Sanders Calfee


Leander Calfee was the son of William Calfee (1801-1851) and Evalina S. Howard (1804-1863). He married Sarah Ella Martin (1855-1903) and together, they had six children: Robert Martin Calfee (1876-1968); William Augustus Calfee (1878-1906); Leander Sanders Calfee, Jr. (1883-1884); Margaret Calfee Schuermann (1884-1972); John Draper Calfee (1887-1888) and Ella Lee Calfee Seagle (1891-1938).

Leander was a farmer (age 32) and enlisted as a Pvt. in the Confederate Army on September 9, 1861. He served in Co. F, 54th Virginia Regiment. On January 1,1862, he was reported sick and hospitalized on January 25, 1864. He later was captured and became a prisoner of war in Bentonville, NC. He was confined the next day at Point Lookout, MD and returned home the following June.

After returning to VA, he became a farmer, merchant and the Postmaster of Pulaski, VA. With his brother Gustavus, they had the first store, a general store called "Calfee Brothers". Later, there was "L.S. Calfee and Company". In 1880, he obtained the contract for hauling zinc from the mines to Bertha Zinc Works until the railroad came to the area in 1885.

Leander Sanders Calfee was a "Capitalist", merchant, President of Pulaski Loan & Trust Co., Mayor of Pulaski, farmer. principal shareholder in the Dora Furnace and Development Company. He was a Republican in politics and a candidate for the House of Delegates.

The bridge that passes over New River on Highway 100 near Barren Springs, Wythe County, VA is the Leander Sanders Memorial Bridge.
