About Pvt. (CSA), Charles Whitfield Harnsberger

He was a farmer by trade. He served with the Riverton Invicables during the Civil War. They were Company I of the Tenth Regiment of Virginia Infantry. He was detailed as the btigade Wagon Master, eventually promoted to Quartermaster and Foragemaster. During the War Charles had one of his favorite saddles hidden for him by one of his servants as the Union soldiers raided the family home. He was paroled on 20 May 1865 at Staunton. At Wars end Charles found himself with barrels of useless Confederate money currency, most of which was valueless and burned. Some remains in the family today. An 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County shows C. W. Harnsberger as the owner of 582 Acres, as a farmer at Elkton. Charles tragically fell to his death while working in the loft of his barn.
