Veteran: PVT. Capt. Johnathan Hamby's Ind. Company of Henry Co, VA. Militia. May, 1781-June, 1781. along with his brother Garrett aka Jarred Van der Griff. Garrett died in Blue Creek Dist, Habersham Co, GA (present day White Co, GA). From Garrett's pension Record: Entered service under Jonathan Hamby Captain who was marched to Salisbury NC by his Captain at which place he was placed under the command of of Major Charles Rose a regular Captain and marched by him to Ninety-Six in South Carolina where he was placed under the command of Colonel William Washington under General Nathaniel Greene. He served three months and was discharged again.
That some time in the month of March in the year 1781 her husband the said Jonathan Hamby paraded his company in the county of Henry in the State of Virginia (That part of Henry now Patrick) and took the line of march again, to go to the aid of General Greene in the State of South Carolina, he and his company being drafted as she was informed and marched off immediately through the County Surry in North Carolina (that part now Stokes) crossing at the Shallow Ford of the Yankin through Rowan and other counties in North Carolina into South Carolina where he joined General Greene's Army at Ninety-Six. His return home was in the month of September in the same year 1781.
He did about the 1st of September in the year 1779 enter the service of the United States as a private volunteer soldier upon a tour of six months in the company of Captain Jonathan Hamby, that the name of his lieutenant was Edward Tatum that he rendezvoused with his company at the neighborhood muster ground and was marched from thence by his captain into South Carolina and there attached to the Regiment of Col. Munroe. That he was then marched to a place called 96 near Charlestown where he was kept for some time and then marched as part of a guard for some prisoners from 96 to Winnsboro where he was kept stationed guarding said prisoners & some public stores until the full expiration of his service. He was discharged and returned home.

Jacob was the son of Leonard aka Lendert van der Griff. b 1716 Bensalem,Buck Co., PA and Edey ? Jacob Sr. was a Tax Payer and member of the Henry Co, VA Militia as was Leonard also in Henry Co, VA. Leonard also has Public Service Claims in Henry Co, VA. This family had moved from PA to Delaware to NC to VA. After the American Revolution they migrated back to NC and then to TN, SC, and GA. They set up a trading network that covered several states and existed during the late 18th century and early 19th century.
