About Pvt. Hubert Leroy Atwood
Leroy joined the British Army after signing on as a crew member on a ship bringing horses from New York to Brest, France in March of 1916. Family story is that they were in need of ambulance drivers and mechanics, and Leroy was an automobile enthusiast. He was shot by a sniper.
Private, 13th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. Killed in action. Son of Alanson H. and Mimie I.W. Atwood, of Watertown, Litchfield Co., Conn., U.S.A. Age: 20.
