In 1860, he was a laborer living with his parents in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg March 6, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 9 as a private with the second organization of Co. F, 104th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

He married Sarah Jane Streese and fathered Minnie May (b. 09/13/69 - married William C. Bell), Charles C. (b. 11/15/70, d. 03/30/72), Margaret A. (b. 01/28/72, d. 03/28/72), Harry Elmer (b. 07/01/73), and Carrie Emma (b. 02/06/76 - married John Zeiders). Sarah died in 1907, and he married Catherine Lebo in 1910.
