Ava Jane Grainger was the daughter of John "Jack" Grainger, Jr. and Ava Jane Bullock, daughter of Charles and Dicey Elvington (Yelverton) Bullock. She married Kenneth (Kenny) Asbury Graham in 1863, son of William Bellamy and Jane Conner Graham , Mitchell Swamp, present day Loris, SC. Ava Jane and Kenny had a large family, owned a plantation off Old Green Sea and Old Tabor City Hwy. near State Line along the border. She was a remarkable woman who help her neighbors, friend and strangers in need. In the 1870's diptheria fever wiped out half her children. It was after the bloody Civil War reconstruction was going on. A young yankee came walking along the trail past my great grandparent plantation. Noticing the man was terribly ill Kenny ran out to meet the man, picked him up and carried the fellow into his home. Ava Jane prepared a pallet for him to lay on while her husband rode on horseback to fetch his cousin young Dr. McQueen. The man died without ever knowing his name. Kenny and Stephen Joe built a wood box to bury the young man in, dug a grave and saw to it he had a Christian burial under a big old tree. Some of the little children contacted the fever and died. It was a sorrowful time one my great grandparents never fully recovered. In 1883 Kenny died suddenly from a massive heart attack before his wife could lite the lamp. Ava Jane told and retold the saga how the Good Lord took her Kenny to Heaven to be with the little children while leaving her behind with a plantation and six little girls. Ava Jane died in 1894 leaving behind an older daughter raising her young siblings. The Graham sisters remained close all the days of their lives, Ava Jane married my grandfather Doc David Harrelson, on her deathbed she request he marry her sister Jackie Ann and take care of her. What a great blessing it was to our family. Jackie Ann never had any children of her own.
