About Pvt. Michael Opper

Michael Opper served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company A, 31st Regiment, Illinois Infantry. He enlisted on August 15, 1861 and mustered in on September 18, 1861 in Cairo, Illinois at the age of 19. He had dark hair, hazel eyes and a fair complexion.

  • Source - https://www.ilsos.gov/isaveterans/civilMusterSearch.do?key=191153 Michael Opper was born in what is now Germany in 1842 and immigrated to the United States at the age of 14 aboard the Victoria, arriving in New York City from London on August 7, 1856. He was the only Opper aboard the ship so it could be that he came alone. By 1861, Michael Opper had moved west to Pinckneyville, Illinois, where he enlisted in the Union Army. After the war, Michael Hopper married Margaret Roby on 5 Jan 1865 in Ross County, Ohio and moved to Iowa where their first two children were born. Michael Hopper then settled down in Saline County, Missouri, where he owned a farm. He died in Spokane County, Washington on July 15, 1922.
