- Brief Life History; Notes from Wm. McEchron Bowden (1893-1970):
“Nathaniel Carswell was born in England – probably Devonshire. He sailed to Plymouth, MA as a young man – he was a mariner by trade. From Plymouth he moved to Marlboro, then to Deerfield, where he married Esther Henry. They settled in Colrain, MA in 1772, while living there and raising a family he was persuaded by Deacon Robert Pennell to visit Salem, NY, then called New Perth or White Creek. Nathaniel liked what he saw and moved to Salem in 1778, bringing his wife and children except Elizabeth who had married Mr. Orr in Deerfield.
Nathaniel was now a blacksmith. He bought from Captain John Barnes lots 51, 52, and 61 in the Turner’s Patent on May 1, 1779. Here he settled and lived till his death. He was an ardent Episcopalian and would walk over the hills to Camden Valley on Sunday to attend an Episcopal service as Salem had only Presbyterian Churches at that time. It is believed that he was both blacksmith and farmer while living in Salem.
At one time during the Revolutionary War, he, like many of the people of Salem was driven from his home by raids of the enemy and he and his family took refuge with the family of Joseph Stewart of Little White Creek, Mr. Stewart had been a neighbor when they both lived in Colrain, MA.
Nathaniel and his wife Esther are buried in the Old Revolutionary Graveyard in Salem. Their stones being near the north boundary of the cemetery and about ½ way from East to West.”
