About Pvt. Samuel Little

Samuel Little served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War in Company G (Rockport Steel Blades), 6th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on August 4, 1862 at Brookhaven, MS and promptly deserted on October 1. On August 1, 1864, three years after his first enlistment, he reenlisted from desertion into the same company. He was captured by the Union on September 3, 1864 at the Battle of Atlanta, GA after the confederate surrender of Atlanta. He told his captures that he was loyal to the Union and that he was conscripted against his will in the Rebel Army and that he had deserted to avail himself of the Amnesty Proclamation. Nonetheless, he was sent up north to the Union prisoner of war camps. First arriving at the Military Prison in Louisville, KY on October 28, 1864, from which he was sent to Camp Douglas Prison in Chicago, IL on October 29. He arrived at Camp Douglas on November 1, 1864, where he died three months later, on January 31, 1865 of Diarrhea. He was buried in Block 2 in Chicago City Cemetery.
