The son of Peter & Caroline (Miller) Shultz, in 1860 he was a carpenter living in Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg December 14, 1861, overstating his age by three years, mustered into federal service that same day at Harrisburg as a private with Co. K, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry, but deserted January 29, 1862. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg March 17, 1865, as a private with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. K, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.
After the war, he married Mary Alice Thomas and fathered Charles F. (b. ?), Lena Rebecca (b. 1874 - married William Francis Baker), Emma J. (b. 1878 - married Samuel Jesse Shafer) and lived to 100, John H. (b. 1882), Mary M. (b. @1881 - married Vincent Charles Lawrence), Olive "Ollie" (b. 1891 - married an Osborn), and Bessie (b. 1893 - married Earl Smith). In 1890, he lived in Franklin Township, Adams County, but died at his daughter Mary's Gettysburg home at age 73-11-21 from a "cerebral hemorrhage" with "cardio renal insufficiency" a contributing factor.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Nov 28 2018, 2:17:17 UTC
