

Robert F. Hester served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company A, 6th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (also known as 1st West Tennessee Cavalry). He entered service August 11, 1862 in Bethel, Tenn and mustered in on September 1, 1862 in Bethel, Tenn with the rank of Sergeant. In November 1862, Robert Hester deserted and, when he returned, was reduced to the rank of Private on December 31, 1862 by order of Col. F. Hurst. In January of 1863, He was again absent without leave. Sometime during January and February of 1864, Robert Hester misplaced his horse equipment and therefore owed the government $3.43. On April 15, 1864, he was detached from his regiment and was stationed at Helena, Arkansas by order of Gen. Stephen A. Hurlbut. He was back with his regiment by May, 1864. On May 28, 1864, he was admitted to a hospital due to Tertian Diarrhea. He returned to duty on June 4, 1864. From July until October 1864, he was placed in confinement in Fort Pickering, Memphis, Tenn. He returned to duty in November or December of 1864 with the loss of two months pay. In June 1865, he was stationed on guard duty at a Saw Mill, two miles East of Pulaski, Tenn.
