Nikitin, Pyotr Vasilievich

Professor and rector of the Imperial St. Petersburg University, academician, vice-president of the Academy of Sciences (1900-1916).

Biography

He studied at the St. Petersburg Seminary and the Historical and Philological Institute , was a teacher at the Second Gymnasium (Russian and Latin languages), then sent abroad to Leipzig. In 1873 he received the Department of Classical Philology at the Nizhyn Institute of the Prince. Bezborodko , in 1879 he entered as an associate professor at St. Petersburg University , in 1883 he was approved as an extraordinary professor of the Institute of History and Philology, since 1886 he was an ordinary professor of Greek language and literature at St. Petersburg University. As the professor of St. Petersburg State University E. D. Frolov notes , Nikitin “brilliantly used epigraphic material to reconstruct such an important phenomenon in the cultural life of the ancient Greeks, which wastheatrical performances ” [1] .

Elected a full member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1888). From July to December 19, 1890, he served as dean of the Faculty of History and Philology, and from that date on he was appointed rector of the Imperial St. Petersburg University [2] (1890-1897). Nikitin's capital research: "On the history of the Athenian dramatic contests", gives him a doctorate (1832).

Buried at the Smolensk Orthodox cemetery in St. Petersburg.
