British author. He quickly won money in India with the East India Company. At forty, he is in France, as art collector and with links with Louis XVI court. During the Revolution he tried to help the king but had to emigrate. He came back in Paris in 1808 and died ten years later. Some of his writings: The History, Religion, Learning and Manners of the Hindus (1790), Secret History of the King of France and his Escape from Paris, Researches concerning the Laws, Theology, Learning and Commerce of Ancient and Modern India (1817), History of the Bastille (1798), Pericles and the Arts in Greece, Essay on Swift and his Influence on the British Government, Notice sur Marie Antoinette.
