It seems he was appointed through his brother-in-law Rabbi Menachem Mendel Stern,, and according to Yakatuel Grunwald 'מצבת קודש' זיכרון לראשונים-סיגעט they were married to two sisters. (and it would seem that he had two wives, or the theory isn't right -since he brings no evidence)
