Rachel and Effie Brisbin
This story came from a book about the Brisbins....
Before the Battle of LaColle Mill on March 30, 1814, Joseph's wife Rachel was mistaken for an Indian Scout in the dense woods, and shot at by American soldiers. the bullet grazed Richard and lodged in Effie, the twins she had with her. Rachel's shawl fell off in the excitement revealing her as having the fair complexion and golden hair of a white woman.
On discovering their mistake, the Americans felt terrible, especially the soldier who fired the shot. After attending the wound, the soldiers continued on to LaColle Mill to take part in the battle. The soldier who had wounded Effie, was wounded himself in the battle. In their retreat, he and several others returned towards the American side by way of the Joseph Brisbin farm.
Rachel dressed their wounds and shared what food she had with them. Effie lived, grew to womanhood, and married.
