Rachael Triplett as daughter of Francis Triplett & Mildred Edrington from unpublished account of their life by Thomas Triplett Russell of which a portion, pages 210 to 219 and charts No. 9 and the Edrington Family were obtained from Scott Swanson, Dept of History, Butler University, 4600 Sunset Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46208-3485 on 27 Aug 1977.
The William Peters Papers, Ohio University, Athens Ohio record a family genealogy of the Hugh Henderson Hall family. William Peters recorded that Hugh Henderson Hall was married on 21 April 1789 to Nancy Butler, daughter of Capt. Joseph Butler and Rachel Triplett of Loudoun Co VA.
A search of the Loudoun Co VA records disclosed that Joseph Butler leased 150 acres of land located in Shelburn Parish, Loudoun Co Va (Bk K, pg 324-327 dated 8 August 1774) from Manss? Page, Junr. and his wife Mary of the county of Gloucester in the Colony of Virginia. The lease term was for the natural lives of Joseph Butler, Rachel, his wife and Nancy his daughter. This establishes their presence in Loudoun Co VA in 1774.
We have found no further record of the Rachel Triplett. We assume that she died between 1774 and the 1810 census of Fayette Co. PA. (See below under 1810). The will of Fanny Butler, Rachel's daughter, dated 5 Jan 1818, filed 6 May 1822 in Will Book 5, pagbe 266 at Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, makes no mention of her mother, but does provide for her father, Joseph Butler, Sr.
1778 (or later) her husband, Joseph Butler, is listed in Shelburne Parish with four tithables on an undated list (1778 or later) compiled by Simon Triplett. Those listed were Joseph Butler, John Murphey & negroes Alice & Lettice. See Marty Hiatt & Craig Roberts Scott "Loudoun County Virginia Tithables 1758-1780," Iberian Publishing Co., Athens, GA, 1995, Vol. 3, pg. 1419.
1779-1782 The Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution 1775-1783 by John H.Gwathmey, Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc. Baltimore, Md, 1987, pg 117 lists Joseph Butler, Captain, Loudoun Militia, took oath Oct. 13, 1782, recommended as 1st Lieut. 1781; recommended as 2nd Lieut. Oct. 1779. Also, another entry on the same page refers to a Joseph Butler who served with the 7th, 9th and 10th Virginia Regiments of the Continental Line.
1780 Her husband, Joseph Butler, is listed in Shelburne Parish with five tithables on a 1780 list compiled by Cuthbert Harrison. Those listed were Joseph Butler, David McCarty & negroes Alice, Lettice & Curtis. See Marty Hiatt & Craig Roberts Scott "Loudoun County Virginia Tithables 1758-1780," Iberian Publishing Co., Athens, GA, 1995, Vol. 3, pg. 1112 & 1119.
1781 Her husband, Joseph Butler, is listed in Shelburne Parish with eight tithables on a 1781 list compiled by Wm. Bronaugh. Those listed were Joseph Butler, Reuben Triplett, Zachariah Riddle & negroes Alice, Lettice, Cyrus, Oliver & George. See Loudoun County Virginia Tithables 1758-1780, Iberian Publishing Co., Athens, GA, 1995, Vol. 3, pg. 1163.
1782-On 3 Dec 1782 her husband, Joseph Butler, leased 300 acres in Loudoun Co VA for 18 years from 25 Dec 1783 recorded in Bk N, pg 447 from Henry Alex Ashton.
1782 Her husband is listed in Shelburne Parish with four tithables on a 1782 list compiled by Cuthbert Harrison. Those listed were Joseph Butler & negroes Elce, Lettice & Bett. See Marty Hiatt & Craig Roberts Scott "Loudoun County Virginia Tithables 1758-1780," Iberian Publishing Co., Athens, GA, 1995, Vol. 3, pg. 1195
1783 Her husband, Joseph Butler, is listed in Shelburne Parish with seven tithables on a 1783 list compiled by William Bronaugh. 1810 The 1810 Census of Union Twp Fayette Co PA pg 104 lists Joseph Butler (M 0-0-0-1-1 /F 1-0-1-0-0/Free 1-Slaves 0) as the entry next to Hugh Hall, who married Nancy Butler, daughter of Capt Joseph Butler. Whether this listing is for Joseph Butler, Sr. or Joseph Butler, Jr. we do not know. But the demographics listed suggest that it could be either of them. The male aged 26-44 could be Joseph, Jr. and the male 45 or over could be Joseph, Sr. The female age 16 to 25 could be Fanny Butler, unmarried daughter of Joesph Sr. The identity of the female under ten years of age is unknown. No female who would be the age of Rachel was listed, indicating the possibility that she may have died before 1810.
The 1820 Census of Springfield Twp., Hamilton Co. OH, page 168, lists Joseph Butler (M 0-0-0-0-1-0/F 0-1-0-0-1). This male listed (age 26-44) seems too young to be Joseph Butler, Sr. The female listed (age 45 & over) could be his daughter, Fanny. However, since Fanny was unmarried, the identity of the female aged 10 to 15 is unknown. Joseph Butler, Jr. is listed on page 169 (M 0-0-0-0-1-0/F 0-0-0-0-1-0). This entry places him in the same age bracket (26-44) as his supposed father. No female who would be the age of Rachel was listed.
