MEMORIAL PHOTOS 0 FLOWERS 1 Rachel Pendleton was born Rachel Hampton in Surry County, North Carolina. Her father was Collins Hampton whose will was probated in 1804 and which lists Rachel in that will.

Rachel married Vincent Maness (from Moore County, North Carolina) and they migrated to Virginia.

Rachel and Vincent had 4 children:

1. Silas Hale Maness (B1805) 2. Lazarus Lawson Maness B1808 (later spelled 'Mainous') 3. Absalom Maness B1810 (later spelled 'Mainus'), and 4. Juriah Maness B1815 (sometimes spelled 'Manace')

In 1830, Vincent Maness died. Her children were grown. After about 10 years, she re-married a widower, Reuben Pendleton (son of Benjamin Pendleton).

Their marriage is listed in Scott County, Virginia marriages as occurring on November 14, 1840. The last name was translated as 'Morris'. This is incorrect. Several lines down on the same register is the marriage of 'Steling S. Maness' (again listed as 'Morris' incorrectly) to Mary Maden on October 8, 1840. Sterling S. Maness was the son of Isom Maness, a brother of Vincent. Rachel was therefore the 'aunt' of Sterling.

Reuben Pendleton died in 1860 however Rachel it is believed died in 1850. They were married for about 10 years before her death. Since she was married to Reuben, she was buried in the same Cemetery that he eventually was buried in, in Scott County, Virginia.

Reuben and Rachel had no children as they were old at the time of their marriage. They were both in their 60's.

Rachel's grave is unmarked but next to his.
