FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FOR RACHEL STEPHENSON

Funeral services were held in Holden, July 23, at 2 p.m. for Rachel L. Stephenson, who died at her home there Saturday, July 20th, following a serious illness of only nine days. She was the wife of Simeon T. Stephenson and the mother of Mrs. Hazel Thornblad of Fillmore. She was born Oct. 28, 1856 in Pleasant Grove, the daughter of Albert and Lettie McKee Stevens. She came to Holden while a child and has been a resident there since that time.

She was the mother of eleven children, nine of whom survive her. Those surviving her are her husband and the following children: Mrs. Marinda Nixon, Simeon T. Stephenson and Bruce Stephenson of Holden; Mrs. Lettie Stevens and Mrs. Mabel Webb of Salt Lake City; Albert Stephenson of Duchesne; Mrs. Mattie Knight, Hinckley; Mrs. Hazel Thornblad, Fillmore; and Mrs. Jean Johnson, Delta; also by three brothers; Albert Stevens, San Berdardino; David Stevens of Wyoming and George Stevens, Salina, Utah; by 60 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. In addition to rearing her own 11 children, she took her grandson Ivan Stevens when a babe of 6 weeks and has raised him to manhood. She has also assisted in caring for his three brothers, whose mother died when Ivan was a baby; she has been a great help and an inspiration to the five children of Mrs. Lettie Stevens, and to the three children of Mrs. Hazel Thornblad, whose mothers were the bread winners of their respective families, as well as to all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her husband and all of her children were at her bedside at the time death occurred.

The speakers at the funeral services were Edward F. Stevens, Richard Nixon, Bishop Mark Bennett and J.H. Webb. The opening prayer was offered by Franklin Badger, the closing prayer by James Stephenson and the grave was dedicated by Francis M. Lyman, Jr. The music was furnished by the Singing Mothers and a male quartet. A violin solo was rendered by Mrs. Georgia Gustaveson. The chapel was packed with relatives and friends, many of whom came a considerable distance to pay their tribute to this noble wife and mother. Among those from out town were: Mr. David Stevens, Wyoming, Mr. and Mrs. George Stevens and Mrs. Olsen, Salina; Mr. and Mrs. Heber Webb and family, Mrs. Lettie Stevens and family, Mr. Earl Stevens and family, Mrs. Carrol Olsen, Salt Lake City; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Thornblad and Mrs. Emma Gunderson, Sandy Utah; Mr. Albert Stephenson, Duchesne; Mr. Anthony Stephenson, Mr. George Stephenson, Mr. Will Holman, Mr. Evan Johnson and family, Delta.
