Roger A. (Randy) Carnahan Roger Andrew (Randy) Carnahan of Rolla, Missouri, 44, lost his life in an airplane crash on October 16, 2000, in rural Jefferson County, while piloting his father, Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan, to a political event in New Madrid.
Mr. Carnahan, the oldest of four children, practiced general law as Managing Partner of the law firm, Carnahan, Carnahan & Hickle in Rolla, Missouri. He was owner and operator of Carnahan Farms and a principal in Carnahan & Associates, an international business consulting firm for clients in the United States, Eastern Europe and the Orient.
He was a former Democratic Committeeman and Treasurer of the successful Carnahan for Governor campaign in the 1992 election. Over the past few years, he had served as a close political advisor for his father and was a regular pilot on political trips during the Governor's recent bid for the United States Senate.
His memberships include the Missouri Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of Missouri, and the Rolla Kiwanis Club. He served on the Board of Directors of the Central Ozarks Mental Health Services, Inc., Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the Achieving Better Lifestyles for the Elderly (ABLE) Commission. He was Past President of the Phelps County Bar Association and the Heartland Chapter of the Missouri Pilots Association.
Mr. Carnahan attended the First Baptist Church of Rolla where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and as a member of the Finance and Personnel Committees.
He was selected to be a member of the Rotary International Group Study Exchange Program in Nigeria in 1991 and was an Eagle Scout.
He enjoyed flying, horses and mountain climbing.
He is survived by his mother, Jean Carnahan, of the home; two brothers, Russ and Tom Carnahan, both of St. Louis; one sister, Robin Carnahan, of St. Louis; one sister-in-law, Debra Carnahan, of St. Louis; an uncle and aunt, Bob and Oma Carnahan, of Rolla; and two nephews, Austin and Andrew, of St. Louis.
Mr. Carnahan will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Rolla. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 21, 2000, at the First Baptist Church of Rolla. Private family services and burial will be at the Carson Hill Cemetery in Ellsinore, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the International Mission Board, P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, Va. 23230.
Arrangements are under the direction of Null and Son Funeral Home, Rolla, Missouri, and Houser-Millard Funeral Directors, Jefferson City, Missouri.
