UNION, SC - Ray Gideon Black, 88, widower of Elizabeth Oda Belle (Yount) Black, formerly of Union, died Saturday, December 30, 2006 at Morningside Assisted Living in Sumter, SC.
Born in Union, September 21, 1918, a son of the late William Walker and Josie (Rochester) Black. Mr. Black graduated from Wofford College, retired from Timken Company, and was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Gaffney. Mr. Black was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II.
Mr. Black was predeceased by three sisters: Sis Black, Sarah Nell Black, and Mary Coleen (Black) Davis; seven brothers: Claude Walker Black, Charles Noah Black, William Edward Allen "Ed" Black, Frank Wilson Black, Ralph Dempsey Black, Dewey Lee Black, and Louis Jackson "Louise" Black; and a great-grandson: Grant.
Mr. Black was survived by three sons: Boyd Black and wife, Cheryl, of Camden, SC; Raymond Black and wife, Mary, of Jacksonville, FL; and Sandy Black and wife, Mary, of Titusville, FL; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister: Virginia (Black) Carter and husband, Theron, of Union, SC; and a brother, Dwight Gene "Dean" Black and wife, Mavis, of Apple Valley, CA;
Funeral services were held at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, January 3, 2007, with the Reverend Robert Emory officiating. Burial followed in the Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery, of Union, SC, with military honors. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home ministered.
