

Ray J. Hammerschmidt, 74, 1111 E. 13th, died Friday, March 18 at St. Anthony Hospital.
He was born April 2, 1908 at Walker, the son of John and Anna (Brungardt) Hammerschmidt.
A former Ellis County Clerk from January of 1957 up to January of 1967; Register of Deeds from January of 1969 up to Jaunuary of 1973. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He married Mary Von Feldt. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, FOE, the Victoria VFW and Hays American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Virgil Schlyer, Nevada, Mo., and Gary Schlyer, Victoria; three daughters, Rita Taggart, Gary, Ind., LaVera Peacock, Elgin, Ill., and JoAnn Henningan, Hutchinson; two brothers, Dan, Hays, and Joe, Victoria; three sisiters, Sister Anna Josita, Salina, Mary Schulte, Victoria, and Clara Kuhn, Ellis; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church; burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery with graveside military honors by the Victoria VFW.

Raymond and Lidwina never had children.
Raymond taught school for ten years. He was a World War II Veteran and owned and operated Ray's Cleaners in Victoria, KS. He was Ellis County Clerk for ten years and Register of Deeds for six years.
Lidwina taught school in Ellis and Russell Counties for forty years.
After the death of Lidwina, Ray married Mary Schyler nee Vonfeldt. Mary had five children from her first marriage to William Schyler who died July 22, 1959.
