Raymond graduated from Union High School in 1927, and studied music and art at Drake University in Des Moines for two years. He graduated from Chillicothe Business College in Missouri.
After graduation, he moved to California, and then to Florida where he was employed by Lyke’s Steamship Company, and taught in a business college in Tampa.
He took Social Security Training in Baltimore in 1937, and was a Field Representative with the Civil Service in Orlando until he retired in 1972.
He served for two years in the First Army, assigned from Camp Croft, South Carolina Infantry Replacement Training Center during World War II. Here he met his future wife, Mary Elizabeth Vernon, who was the Post Chaplain’s Secretary. They married in October of 1945, after Japan surrendered.
Ray served his church as Organist, Deacon, and Treasurer, and was a Boy Scout leader for years. He had many hobbies including weaving, bread baking, photography and woodworking.
After retirement, he and his wife, Mary, traveled extensively. They built a home in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina where he enjoyed working with the lathe, and making bowls, lamps, chests, mantle clocks, and hundred year old wagon wheels into hanging candelabra for homes.
At the present time Raymond and Mary live in Orlando, Florida. Raymond is seventy-six years old, and he is ill with thyroid and lung cancer, but states that he has yet to smoke his first cigarette. He enjoys reading, and working with his hobbies.
