About Rebecca Katterns
The penchant for plumage by the wealthy during the Victorian era saw the wholesale slaughter and near extinction of the remarkable ostrich. It wasn’t concern for the species that stopped the slaughter, however, but the establishment of ostrich farming where the feathers were taken from the live bird. Katikati had it’s own ostrich farm, and when the birds escaped, as they often did, they provided their own entertainment as they ran amok throughout the town.
