Born in Hamburg, Germany and later moved to Bremerhaven. He had been in the Honor Guard Unit for Kaiser Wilhelm. He didn't like the direction in which the country was going so he decided to go move to America.

Jumped on a ship from Germany with his brother Bill and they made their way to the USA as stowaways.

He became a Drawmeister at Blatz Beer in Milwaukee. He joined the "German Bund," a federation or union with political purposes--possibly promoting Nazi Germany--but probably not the "German American Bund," since it wasn't established until the 1930s.

Some family members believe he committed suicide and refuse to speak his name. Laurence Buckman disagreed, saying he was hung for refusing to participate in a union strike at a brewery.

Jack Reiss believes he may have been hung by members of a group opposing the "German Bund," of which he had been a member.
