Rene (32), a social worker, was bludgeoned to death with her son's baseball bat at her home in Douglasdale, on 31st August 2006.
Her husband, Rudi, reported to the police that he had seen two running out of their garage. The police never arrested anyone, but one year later they arrested Rudi and charged him with the murder of Rene, based on the strength of a police 'expert'.
After further investigation by Rudi's defence team, it was uncovered that DNA samples collected at the scene contained Rene's blood, and the blood of two unknown males. Rudi's blood had not been found anywhere. This confirmed what Rudi had originally told police detectives on the day of Rene's murder.
The discovery regarding the DNA was made only a few days before Venter was due to go on trial during February 2010, yet the State’s report regarding the DNA evidence had been available for more than two years.
His case was thrown out of court on 15th February 2010. The two murderers were never caught.
Rudi remarried and lives with his wife, and his two sons, Andrew and Renier, in Honeydew.
