Obituary in the Cincinnati Daily Gazette, Page 4, Column 5:

A Gallipois Sensation: Reuben Bray, a prominent citizen, blows out his brains with a shotgun

Special dispatch to the Cincinnati Gazette:

Gallipolis, May 6: The most startling sensation for years in our city was the suicide this morning at half-past 5 of Reuben Bray, one of the most prominent and influential men of the place. Your readers will remember the famous mob at Luray, Missouri, in 1879, when Bill Young was taken from his bride of a day and hung, after being acquitted by a jury. The bride was a daughter of Reuben Bray, and her acts disorganized his health and rendered him a prey to trouble. Her death in a house of ill fame in Keokuk, Iowa, last month unsettled his reason. Being a man worth between $40,000 and $50,000 he became the victim of extortionate bills, with the sequel of today.

By some unexplainable way, he found a loaded double shotgun, which had been hidden from him, and sitting on the hall floor, he placed the muzzle to his head, the fatal charge shattering the skull and emptying the cranium of its contents. There he was found by his horrified wife.

Mr. Bray has been prominent as a contractor, member of council, etc. He was 60 years of age (gravestone reads 59 years, 7 days). The remains will be interred by the Masonic Order Sunday at 2 o'clock.

The 1850 Gallipolis Township, Gallia County, Ohio census finds the family as Reubin age 27 a brick mason with $1000 of real estate, wife Mary age 30; sons Benjamin age 5; Jordan age 3; and Julias age 10 months. Reubin's age in this report does not agree with my recorded date on him.

The 1860 Gallipolis Township, Gallia County, Ohio census finds the family as Reubin age 39 brick layer with $3000 of real estate, wife Mary age 42; sons Benjamin age 14; Jordan age 12; Columbus age 5; daughters Phebe age 3 and Ellen age 6 months. Notice that Reubin and wife Mary have now gained 2 years since the last census, that shows how much we can trust gathering ages based on census reports.

The 1870 Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio census finds the family as Reubin age 49 brick manufacturer with $12,000 of real estate and $5000 of personal property; wife Mary age 53; sons Benjamin age 25; Jourdon age 23; Columbus age 16; and daughter Lydia age 13. Now, in the previous census there was a daughter Phebe age 3, Phebe is not shown here in 1870, Phebe and Lydia have to be one and the same, just am not sure on the order of names. Also Ellen is not present here, she may have married off! UPDATE: Allen Boynton informs me there was a daughter Lydia and he has some history on her, thus I am changing her name to Lydia Ann Phebe Bray based upon this. Also, Allen informs me that there was a Mary Bray b. 1848, I have no indications of there being a Mary, she fits in the time period for Ellen Bray thus my thinking is that she was Mary Ellen Bray and I am changing the name for her

The 1880 Gallipolis Township, Gallia County, Ohio census finds the family as Reubin age 58, he now has a new wife Permelia age 59 born VA, also still living at home sons Benjamin age 34 and Jourdon age 32.

The census reports place his year of birth 1821 - 1823 , the Gallia County Ohio Death Records 1867-1899 places it at May 1, 1819 and Allen Boynton places it at Apr 30, 1822.

Allen Boynton shows his first name as Thomas, he evidently went by Reuben all of his life as that is what most records show.

Their son Julius appears in the 1850 census as 10 months of age, he died Oct 1, 1850 at 10 months 18 days and is buried in the Denney Cemetery, Gallia County, Ohio.

I have added three children to this family based on Denney Cemetery records which show them listed as children of R and M Bray. The one, daughter Virginia was 16 years of age when she died in 1876, she should have showed up in the 1860 and 1870 census but is not there, she is shown as daughter of R & M Bray and buried close to Mary Bray thus it is pretty good evidence that she belongs there except for the census reports. The other child, a unnamed son must have been born shortly after the1860 census, he is buried with the family at the Denney Cemetery, shown as _____S/O R & M Bray d. Mar 9, 1862 at 1 year 1 month and 10 days. The third Reuben Jr. is not shown as son of R & M but is buried beside Mary Bray and the age and death date fit the birth pattern of their children, he died Aug 10 1865 at 1 month 13 days. These children will be left as part of the family until proven otherwise, their posted DOB is based upon this data here.

DOB established for Virginia based upon death at 16y 4m 29d, for Son based on death at 1y 1m 10d and Reubin Jr. based on death at 1m 13d.

Benjamin died in the Gallipolis Infirmary, he is buried at the Pine Street Cemetery, Gallipolis, Ohio per his death certificate. Per the Infirmary records, he was sick and destitute when he was admitted on Oct 3, 1909. His death certificate states he was widowed, no data on a wife at the present time.
