About Reuben Maxwell
Reuben Maxwell was the 2nd son, born to John Maxwell and Agatha "Agnes" Henry on November 4, 1795 at Elbert County, GA.
Reuben Maxwell was the husband of Elizabeth Thornton, the daughter of Reuben Thornton & Elizabeth Allen. They were married on December 16, 1821, officiated by Rev. Dozier Thornton at Elbert County, GA.
Reuben Maxwell moved from Elbert Co.,GA to Talbot County, GA in 1833; then on to Tallapoosa Co.,AL in 1844, where he established a successful plantation between Kellyton & Alexander City, Al.
Reuben Maxwell & Elizabeth Thornton Maxwell were the parents of 11 children, 6 sons & 5 daughters.
Reuben Maxwell was stricken by a heart attack at the dinner table on May 31, 1861, and died at the age of 65. He is buried in the Maxwell Cemetery, Alexander City, Alabama. He was deeply loved by his wife, children and grandchildren.
Interesting to note is that the location of the Maxwell Cemetery is on the exact spot where the garden that belonged to Reuben Maxwell & Elizabeth Thornton Maxwell once stood on the original plantation. It is maintained by a fund that was established by Jake Maxwell; who built an attractive iron fence around the Maxwell family graves.
