About Rev. Absalom Wright

James Alfred Wright was born in Virginia in 1762 the son of Robert and Margaret Wright who were from Amherst, Virginia. James Wright married Frances Dawson abt 1795. Included in items appraised in his father Robert Wright's estate after he died in 1816 in Nelson County, Virginia were a set of Blacksmith Tools.

James and Frances Wright became the parents of a son Robert Dawson Wright, June 12, 1796 in Savanna,(Savannah) Georgia. Frances C. Wright was born November 11, 1798, Savannah, GA, and Henry Denson Wright was born May 30, 1800. James sold his property in Georgia in 1800.

By 1802 James and Frances Wright and their young children were living in Pine Ridge where James had a land grant, a few miles from Natchez, Yahoo. Co., Mississippi. Frances (Dawson) Wright died October 5, 1802 in Mississippi.

In 1803 James Wright married Mary "Polly"(Scoggins) Carroll, a daughter of Jonas and Catherine Scoggins, the widow of John Carroll and mother of four children. They moved in 1803 to Catahoula Parish, Louisiana where James Wright and his father-in-law Jonas Scoggins partnered in a sawmill for several years. James farmed and worked as a blacksmith machinist. In later years he moved and had a small farm named "Pinehill".

James Wright received word in that son Henry Denson Wright was very ill. Most of their children were grown by this time. James and Mary traveled to Benton, Mississippi to see Henry, and for Mary to care for her widowed mother Catherine. During this time James purchased land where James and Mary, and Catherine lived in their final home in Satartia, Yazoo County, Mississippi. Son Henry Denson Wright died December 20, 1836. James Wright died February 1, 1838, burial place unknown in Yazoo County, Mississippi.

James and Mary (Scoggins) Wright had seven children:

1. Alexander Wright: b Mar 4, 1805

2. James Gaines Wright: June 15, 1806

3. ABSALOM WRIGHT: b June 6, 1808 - d June 1, 1887. Marr Louise Long. Louise died Aug 30, 1850, burial unknown. Married Elizabeth Henrietta (Tynes) Conerly the widow of Dr. John Russell Conerly. Holly Grove Cemetery (Row 7) Anacoco, Vernon Parish, LA.

7. Louisa C. Wright: b July 5, 1815 LA - d Feb 7,1889 LA. Married William German on March 7, 1838 in Mississippi soon after her father James Wright died. Louisa burial Holly Grove Cemetery, Anacoco, Vernon Parish, LA. William German: b Jun 16, 1814 MS - d May 18, 1861. William German was buried in their pasture off Louisiana Hwy 111 & Old River Road near Vernon/Sabine Parish Line, LA. Members of The Louisiana Genealogical Register knew the location of his grave from several years previously. It was so overgrown with bushes and weeds they could no longer find William German's grave in early 2000s.

Rev. Absalom Wright married Louise Long July 28, 1835 in Ouachita Parish, LA. She died Aug 30, 1850, LA, burial unknown. On September 20, 1855 Absalom Wright married Elizabeth Henrietta (Tynes) Conerly (born Apr 23, 1813 Marion Co, MS), widow of Dr. John Russell Conerly, and mother of 12 children. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Luke Conerly.

Absalom and Elizabeth Wright had one child, Robert Tynes Wright, born June 26, 1857 Vernon Parish, LA - died June 9, 1951 in Anacoco, Vernon Parish, LA. Robert Tynes Wright became a Methodist minister as his father before him. The family attended Holly Grove Methodist Church, and Robert Tynes Wright became Pastor of Holly Grove Methodist Church for the year of 1893. He participated in writing an early history of Holly Grove Methodist Church which gave an insight to the early years of the church, and the members who were instrumental in the building and continuity of it.

Rev. Robert Tynes Wright married Malissa Franklin (b Apr 4, 1858 Sabine Parish, LA - d Nov 4, 1949 Vernon Parish, LA) on Oct 19, 1878 in Vernon Parish, LA. They became the parents of six children, and were married for 61 years until Malissa's death. They share a double headstone in Holly Grove Cemetery.

Rev. Absalom Wright died June 6, 1887 at age 79. Elizabeth Henrietta (Tynes) Conerly Wright died Oct 14, 1895. Both were buried in Holly Grove Cemetery, Row 7.

There are several Wright, Conerly, and German family members buried in the historic cemetery. It is well maintained and cared for. Holly Grove United Methodist Church is very active and has a special place in the fabric of the Anacoco, Vernon Parish Community in the 21st Century. Anacoco is located near Leesville, Louisiana.
