GRIMES, CHARLES D., 1914-2002, age 87, of Gardendale, died June 14, 2002. Mr. Grimes was a retired Postal Supervisor with 32 years service, owner of Grimes Realty, real estate broker, builder and land developer. He was also the owner of Gardendale Skating Rink, a Mason, early civic and church leader in Gardendale, ordained Baptist minister and a founding member of East Gardendale Baptist Church. Mr. Grimes grew up in North Birmingham and later moved to Gardendale, where he was a resident for over 70 years. He is preceded in death by parents, Charles Stephen and Bessie Gravlee Grimes; and brother, Moye Grimes. He is survived by wife of 62 years, Catherine Thompson Grimes; two daughters, Shirley Juban (Lynn), Gigi Scott (Walker); two sons, Charles D. Grimes, Jr. (Mary), Samuel Stephen Grimes (Carol); six granddaughters, Catherine, Julie, and Jenny Grimes, Ivey Grimes, Katie Juban and Kyndall Scott; four grandsons, Charles Todd Grimes (Joy), Samuel and Bennett Grimes, and Hal Juban; sister, Laurie Witcher and numerous nieces and nephews. A special gratitude to Ethel Hayes Sadberry and David Rogers. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to East Gardendale Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers: Hubbard Gravlee, Joe Griffin, Bro. Ray Moore, J. A. Thompson, Sam Thompson, and Don Woodard. Visitation at Gardendale Chapel on Saturday, June 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 16, at 3 p.m. at Gardendale Chapel with burial at Oakwood Gardens. Bro. Allen Davis officiating. Ridout's Gardendale Chapel directing.
