About Rev David Shuck

BIO:

"Rev. David Shuck was born in Harrison County, Indiana, in 1821. He was a graduate of Indiana State University [Class of 1846], and spent most of his life as a teacher, in the public schools, and in college work. He became president of Hartsville University in 1852, and he served in that position for thirteen years.... [From 1866-1870 and again in 1874, he was president of Lane University in Lecompton, Kansas.]

His popularity among his old students of Hartsville College, led them to erect a large and beautiful monument at his grave, with an inscription thereon expressing their love, and regard for their president and teacher. He had lived a life of eighty years, during which time, he had greatly endeared himself to a host of young people, for whom he had so efficiently labored. 'President Shuck,' as he was commonly addressed, was recognized by the State of Indiana as one of its greatest educational leaders in his day...."

—Rev. Adam Byron Condo, History of the Indiana Conference of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ (1926), 179-80.

Notes of George E. Utterback, a cemetery historian of the past:

On the east side of the main drive in adjoining lots are the graves of Mrs. Loucretia Shuck Condo, for many years Latin teacher and Dean of Girls at Columbus High School and Dr. John M. Tobias. The latter, a veteran of twenty battles and more than one hundred skirmishes in the Civil War, had the distinction of commanding the advance infantry division of Gen. Sherman's army in the final Grand Review of the Union army in Washington. On the lower slope, the monument of Prf. David Shuck, twice president of Hartsville College, bears the inscription, "A Powerful Preacher", and the notation, "Erected by Students and Teachers."* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Mar 1 2021, 19:53:31 UTC
