About Rev Ebenezer Hancock
Son of Rev. John and Elizabeth (Clarke) Hancock.
Harvard Class of 1728. Ebenezer received his M.A. degree in 1731. On November 2, 1733 he became his father's collegue and on January 2, 1734, he was ordained. Had his life not been cut short, Ebenezer was scheduled to succeed his father as minister in Lexington. "Last Tuesday morning we had the sorrowful news from Lexington, of the sudden death of the Rev. Mr. Ebenezer HANCOCK, colleague Pastor with his Reverend father of the church of that town. On Thursday he was in good health and rode with his sister from Bedford to Lexington; the next day he was seized with the throat distemper, which has prov'd so mortal of late in many country towns, of which he died on Monday evening following about 9 o'clock in the prime of life, to the great grief of his aged parents, his relatives, and acquaintance, and the whole people under his pastoral care, whose hopes and expectations were very much upon him for a life of service among them many years yet to come; he being well qualified for, and faithful in the discharge of the important work he undertook. As he was greatly beloved by all that knew him, so his death is exceedingly lamented. And his corps was decently inter'd on Friday last." - New England Weekly Journal, February 5, 1740.
