About John Bartlett, SV/PROG



John Bartlett first arrived in the Cape in 1809 as a Blacksmith for the Navy, appointed by the Naval Board, he was stationed at the Cape of Good Hope Naval yard. He worked there for 4 years and left his position as the Foreman of the Smiths to join the LMS as a missionary on the recommendation of Dr Vanderkemp.

He was accepted by LMS and in 1812 traveled with Rev. John Campbell and was left as a missionary at Bethelsdorp, January 1814. In November 1815 he accompanied Mr Ullbrich to a missionary station in Theopolis. He was then called by Rev J. Read to go to Pella, Namaqualand where he remained until 1825. He was asked to go to Pella by Rev. J. Read, after the missionary there past away, Brother Albrecht. In going to this mission station, he lost his books and clothes, but never received any remuneration for it.

In 1825 he then accompanied Dr Phillips to visit all the stations out of the colony. When they arrived at Campbell the people asked Dr Phillips for a missionary as he had promised them one two years earlier. John Bartlett was appointed as the missionary in Campbell where he remained until 1834/1835.

Around 1827, John Bartlett, built a Blacksmith's shop in Campbell.

According to the LMS register, John Bartlett's connection with the LMS was dissolved on the 17th of June 1833.

The above information was obtain from correspondence from John and Richard Bartlett to the LMS ( between 1815 & 1840), in the LMS Archives, London. John Bartlett also wrote a journal from Jan 1815 - Dec 1815. (VSmith)

In 1836 he was still at Campbell and died there in 13.12 1849.

On 11.12.1815, he married Johanna Margaretha Goeyman (3 Children). On 05.07.1830 married Susanna Elizabeth Jacoba Haarhoff (6 Children).

Rev John Bartlett built a stone chapel in Campbell in 1831, where, it is said, that David Livingstone and Robert Moffat preached. Bartlett's Chapel was declared a national monument in 1960. It is one of the oldest churches north of the Orange River.

Aankoms in Suid Afrika in 1811 as sendeling,London Mission Soceity. Gestasionneer Bethelsdorp 1812, Theopolis 1814 en Pella 1816. Na 'n struweling  met LMS breek hy sy bande met hulle en stig sy eie sending  op Campbell in 1825. In 1831 bou hy 'n klipkerk in Campbell wat nou 'n nasionale monument is. Die foto van die kerk verskyn as die profielfoto van sy tweede vrou, Susanna Elizabeth Jacoba Haarhoff.  David Livingston het by geleentheid hier gepreek. Kry spoedig finansiele probleme  omdat die geld nie meer van Londen af gekom het nie.

Op 11/12/1815 trou hy met Johanna Margaretha Goeyeman.Hulle het 2 kinders gehad. (oorlede 1823 op ouderdom van 35) Op 3/7/1825 trou hy met Susanna Elizabeth Jacoba Haarhoff by wie hy 5 kinders het. Sy is die stammoeder van hierdie deel van die familie.Hy sterf in Campbell op 13/12/1849.
