About Rev. John Tyler
John Tyler was the first rector of Christ Church in Norwich, Connecticut. He served there for 54 years. The land was originally given to the church by the Tyler family. Being a servant of the Church of England and loyal to the crown, he was greatly disliked as a Tory, and his life was frequently threatened. In 1768 he went to England to receive ordination, and in that same year he was joined in marriage with Miss Hannah Tracy, daughteer of Isaac and Elizabeth (Bushnell) Tracy. The Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Tyler had nine children, of whom three were sons; and all but one son grew to maturity.
