Began life as a Quaker but later became an ordained minister of the Church of England.


He was the son of Henry & Mary (Harding) Ballinger. He married Charity Wade, 1720, in New Jersey. He moved his young family to Goochland County, Virginia before 1729. Deed Bk 1, Pg 174; Joseph Barringer (sic) of Goochland Co. buys 128 acres on the North side of the James River, on the main fork of Bird Creek from Henry Reynolds. This same land was willed by Joseph Ballinger. Two more misspellings of Ballenger; Order Bk 3, Mar 1732, Case of Joseph Barringer (sic) against James Howlin, dismissed Mar 1735. Order Bk 4 and deed Bk 3 Pg. 372 Case of Joseph Barringer (sic) and Charity, his wife, vs John Henderson, a debt. Land discriptions in every case prove that Joseph Ballinger was the person intended. His Will, Deed Bk 4, Pg 495, Goochland Co., VA calls him "of the Parish and County of Henrico". Joseph Ballinger Will mentions; To wife Charity; negroes Jack, Ned, Nell, Bess & Bridgett, and the rest of my estate. To my daughter Charity Wade Negro girl Phillis. To my daughter Abigail negro girl Nell To my daughter Susannah negro girl Hannah. To my daughter Elizabeth negro boy Guy. To my son Richard 50 pds when he reaches 21. My land in the mountians to be equally divided by my sons Joseph and Richard. Exec. my two sons-in-law, Jeremiah Wade and Pearce Wade, my wife Charity Ballinger and friend, Thomas Cawthon.
