"Richard Smith was a Primitive Baptish preacher for 45 years. The Sam Smith family has his Bible with Smith births and deaths back to 1816. According to county court records of Ousley Co.,KY his brother John was appointed guardian of him there early.

An estate auction in Owsley Co showed that Richard Smith purchased the family Bible of John's. Richard married Nancy Alicia Combs and had 14 children. Nancy, daughter of Nicholas "Danger Nick" Combs, was born June 20, 1772 and died March 11, 1858 at Ary, KY. Rev Richard Smith was great grandfather of "Bad Tom" Smith, who terrorized Breathitt and Letcher Counties. Richard and his brother John were the only surviving children of William and Betty "Eunice" Ritchie.

He married Alicia Combs, daughter of Nick (Danger) Combs in 1794. They settled on Lotts Creek, just above what is now the Perry County line (Knotts County). It is known as the old John Smith place but when John moved there it was called the Richard Smith's place.

There was born to Richard and Alicia Combs Smith 14 children: William, Thomas, Samuel. Nicholas, James, Lorenzo Dow, Joshua, Isaac, Patsy, Polly, Elizabeth, Cynthia, Nancy, and Kizzie. Richard Smith is buried in the Smith family Gravyard at Ary in 1836. Sam Smith of Ary has his bible, which is still in good condition. It has entries of Smith births and deaths back to 1816. Richard was a primative Baptist Preacher for 45 years. He was said to have delivered hell fire sermons and after the service was over would be seen sneaking out back and taking a swig of his whiskey. He settled in Lotts Creek area before moving to Pigeon Roost on Troublesome Creek at Ary.
