About Rev. Robert Campbell

Robert was ordained on 20 October 1761. Reverend Campbell became pastor of the Congregatinal Church of Christ in Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut. The old church records show he had transferred from the Congregational Church of Plainfield, Connecticut in 1760. In 1762 the Church of Canaan was moved to Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York. The church became known as the Yellow Meeting House and Reverend Campbell continued to preach even at a time when the membership was reduced to four men and a few women. Later the membership increased and large numbers of people joined the Church. reverend Cambell was buried in the Church's adjoining cemetery.

Robert came to America at three years old. He was of Scotch descent and of a Protestant family.In 1761, he was ordained, called and installed as the first pastor of the Congregational Church of christ in Canaan, Litchfield Co, CT. which later moved to Stillwater, NY and became the First Congregational Church of Stillwater. The church was also known as the Yellow Meeting House of Stillwater. His grandson wrote: It was said of my grandfather that he was an orthodox preacher and in those days an agreeable speaker. His oldest son Robert officiated in his pulpit when he became unable to attend constantly and exceeded him when he died. Rev. Robert was the first minister in Stillwater, NY. He and his wife had at least 10 children.
