About Rev. Walter E Krebs

Walter Krebs was the son of Isaac Krebs and Esther Topper Krebs. The family moved from Littlestown to Gettysburg in 1841 and to Winchester, VA in 1847. Walter graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1856 as validictorian and from the Reformed Theological Seminary at Mercersburg in 1858. He served German Reformed churches in Emmitsburg, MD; Waynesboro, PA; Allegeheny City, PA. He was Professor of mathematics and history at Franklin and Marshall from 1872-1877. Then he served a church in Bloomsburg, PA. In 1883 he was elected president of the Allentown Female College [now Cedar Crest College.] In 1885 he founded the Edge Hill Institute at 356 East King St., Littlestown, PA [lat 39.748234 long -77.081078]. This one-man college preparatory school, which prepared many future clergy and doctors for higher education, operated until 1900. Rev. Krebs received an honorary doctorate from Franklin and Marshall College in 1899. He was the author of 33 articles in the Reformed Chruch Messenger and the Reformed Church Review. He celebrated his 91st birthday with his son Stanley and wife Marjorie [later Ma Kettle] at their residence at the Hotel de France in New York City. He died at the Diffenback Home on Duke Street, Lancaster, PA where he had resided for eight years. The Krebs had two children: Ada and Stanley.
