The records of Trinity College say he was born near Elphin and was 17 when entering on 16 June 1707.
Rev. Charles Goldsmith of Ballyoughter [which seems a more likely birthplace than Kilkenny West]: born 1690; M.A.; married Anne Jones, 1718; priest 17 Sept. 1719; Curate of Forgney, Pallas, Co. Longford; Rector of Kilkenny West, 1730; died 1747 - Irwin A (Pedigree of Sir Alfred M. B. Irwin C.S.I. and his wife Alice Kathleen née French) (National Library of Ireland GO MS 436).
The Rev. Charles Goldsmith, father of the renowned eighteenth century poet and playwright Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774), was curate at Kilkenny West between 1730 and his death in 1747. His remains are interred in the graveyard. According to popular legend Oliver Goldsmith's career as a poet is said to have started in Kilkenny West church while his father was preaching. .
